Frazey Ford
Frazey Ford is a Canadian singer-songwriter from Castlegar, Canada. She is a founding member of The Be Good Tanyas and works across folk, americana, country and soul.
Early life and background
Ford is raised in the Kootenays in southeastern British Columbia and in Toronto, and later lives in Vancouver. She is born in 1973. Her upbringing and family background shape her songwriting, including the influence of her free-spirited parents; her father is an American draft dodger who moves to Canada. She also says that being a mother is an important influence on her writing.
Solo work
Her solo debut, Obadiah, is released on Nettwerk. The album title comes from Ford’s middle name. Her brothers choose that middle name when she is born, naming her after the family cat Obadiah, which has recently run away.
Musical style and influences
Ford cites rhythm and blues singers Ann Peebles, Roberta Flack and Donny Hathaway as influences, and those influences are reflected in the sound of Obadiah. Jenny Charlesworth of The Georgia Straight describes several songs on the album as moving with a mellow neo-soul beat and highlighted by buttery vocals.
