Flares

Flares is a German progressive post-rock group. The name is also used by other acts, but this entry refers to the German band formed by five musicians who come together in summer 2007. Their music develops around instrumental, ambient and post-rock ideas, with a focus on open-ended structures rather than conventional chorus, verse and bridge forms.

Background

The band forms in Germany in 2007, when five members team up with the stated aim of freeing music from fixed song structure and allowing it to “float and happen”. That approach places them within progressive post-rock, and the group is associated with instrumental and ambient material as well as the broader post-rock field.

The name Flares is also used by Marc Alan, who records under Flares and creates sweeping soundscapes, glitches and melodies. His debut album is Dimensions Divide Us from 2014, made with help from Ben Lukas Boysen, also known as Hecq.
