Fire From the Gods

Fire From the Gods are an Austin, United States group active since 2010, combining metalcore, deathcore, electronic elements, metal, nu metal and post-hardcore. The band forms around vocalist Myke Terry, AJ Channer, Drew Walker and Richard Wicander.

Formation and early releases

The group forms in Austin in 2010 with an original lineup that includes guitarist Drew Walker, bassist Bonner Baker, vocalist Eric July, guitarist Tony Esparza and drummer Judson Curtis. Their first releases are the metalcore debut Sleeping with Anchors & Mirrors and the Sweet Lasting Revenge EP. After that period, July, Esparza and Curtis leave the band.

Line-up change and later work

A re-formed line-up emerges in 2015 through the Headbang Program, with AJ Channer on vocals, guitarist Jameson Teat and drummer Richard Wicander. Channer is born in the Bronx and raised in London and Ghana, and his arrival gives the group a new focus, with lyrics that are often socially conscious and sometimes uplifting.

Style, influences and releases

Fire From the Gods’ sound combines aggressive metal with hip-hop consciousness and heavy grooves. It is compared with the intensity of Sevendust and Slipknot, and with the groove-heavy approach associated with P.O.D., Rage Against the Machine and Skindred. The band signs with Rise Records for its 2016 album Narrative, which is produced by David Bendeth. That record addresses racism, abuse of power and the experience of a minority man living in urban America, while also including underdog anthems. In the following year, the group issues Narrative Retold, a re-release of Narrative with two additional songs guest produced by Jonathan Davis of Korn.
