Fight Like Apes

Fight Like Apes is an Irish alternative rock band from Dublin, formed in 2006 and active until 2016. The group is also referred to as FLApes or FLA. Its line-up includes Mary-Kate “MayKay” Geraghty on vocals and synth, Jamie “Pockets” Fox on keyboard and vocals, Tom Ryan on bass, and Adrian Mullan on drums. The verified member list also includes Lee Boylan.

Style and releases

The band is known for its unusually long record titles, which are often inspired by B movies. Its early releases include two EPs in 2007, How Am I Supposed to Kill You If You Have All the Guns? and David Carradine is a Bounty Hunter Whos Robotic Arm Hates Your Crotch. It then releases two albums, Fight Like Apes and the Mystery of the Golden Medallion in 2008 and The Body Of Christ and the Legs of Tina Turner in 2010. In 2009, it also issues an EP for the American market titled You Filled His Head with Fluffy Clouds and Jolly Ranchers, What Did You Think Was Going to Happen?

Live work and media appearances

Fight Like Apes tours the UK with The Von Bondies, The Ting Tings, The Prodigy and Kasabian. The band also plays at a number of Irish and European festivals during its career. On television in Ireland, it appears on Tubridy Tonight, WeTV, The View, Other Voices and The Cafe.

Recognition

The band receives five Meteor Music Award nominations. Fight Like Apes and the Mystery of the Golden Medallion is nominated for the Choice Music Prize, and The Irish Times names Fight Like Apes the fourth best Irish musical act of its generation in 2009.

Later activity

In November 2016, the band announces that three forthcoming shows will be its last. MayKay later joins the Irish band Le Galaxie in August 2017. The band also plays a show at Dublin’s 3Olympia Theatre in early 2023 and releases a single in 2024.
