Ex Deo

Ex Deo are a Canadian death metal band from Montréal, Quebec, formed in 2008. The group is led by Maurizio Iacono, who also works with Kataklysm, and it develops a Roman-themed approach to death metal. It begins as an artistic project and then becomes a more established band as it attracts interest.

Formation and style

The band forms in 2008 and remains active. Its sound is described as death metal with melodic death metal and symphonic metal elements. Ex Deo is presented as a more selective and less intensively touring project than Kataklysm, with Iacono describing it as a more artistic and prestigious outlet.

Debut album

Ex Deo release their debut album, Romulus, through Nuclear Blast Records in 2009. The album is recorded with producer Jean-Francois Dagenais, who is also a guitarist in Kataklysm. Guest appearances on the album come from Karl Sanders of Nile, Obsidian C. of Keep of Kalessin, and Nergal of Behemoth.
