Evile

Evile is a UK thrash metal band from Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, formed in 2004 and active since then. The group is known for playing thrash metal with a strong 1980s influence, and its name is pronounced “eeh-vile”.

History

The band is founded by old school friends Matt Drake and Ben Carter. After a period of trying different guitarists and bass players, they invite Matt Drake’s brother Ol Drake to join as lead guitarist. Mike Alexander joins on bass after responding to an advert in a local guitar shop, completing the line-up. The group signs to Earache Records in October 2006.

Evile’s debut album, Enter the Grave, is released in 2007 and is produced by Flemming Rasmussen. A second album, Infected Nations, follows in 2009, produced by Russ Russell. The band then releases Five Serpent’s Teeth in 2011 and Skull in 2013, both also produced by Russ Russell.

Line-up changes

Mike Alexander dies in October 2009 from a pulmonary embolism. Joel Graham later joins the band on bass and remains with the group. In 2020, Matt Drake leaves the band, and Ol Drake takes over lead vocals while continuing on lead guitar. Adam Smith, formerly of RipTide, joins on rhythm guitar.

Style and influences

Evile’s sound is rooted in thrash metal and draws on the band members’ shared interest in 1980s thrash. Named influences include Sepultura, Exodus, Metallica, Annihilator and Slayer.

Performances and recognition

Before signing a label deal, Evile is chosen to headline the second stage at Bloodstock Open Air 2006 and to open the main stage at Damnation Festival in Manchester. The band also appears at major festivals including Wacken, Download, Alcatraz, Hellfest and Sonisphere, and tours with Exodus, Machine Head, Kreator, Overkill, Testament and Megadeth. In 2010, the group appears at the Metal Hammer Golden Gods awards.

Later work

In 2020, Evile signs to Napalm Records and begins recording its fifth album with producer and engineer Chris Clancy at Andy Sneap’s Backstage Studios.
