Evil Scarecrow

Evil Scarecrow are a metal group from Nottingham, active since 2002. Their music is associated with alternative rock, black metal, death metal, gothic rock, heavy metal and melodic death metal, and they are also described as a UK black/thrash metal band.

Origins and formation

The group grows out of the remains of Thor’s Children, a band that split up in Lincolnshire before Evil Scarecrow emerges from that line-up. After forming, the band relocates to Nottingham and goes through several line-up changes before settling into its later form.

Style and image

Evil Scarecrow build their identity around heavy metal played with a comic, exaggerated sense of theatre. Their name is linked to a song about a robot, and their performances use props and humour heavily. The group is also known for the self-description “Blue Peter-Metallers,” a reference to the sticky-backed plastic imagery that appears in their story and stage presentation.

Live activity and reputation

The band develops a live following over many years, moving from small pub venues to larger festival stages. Their performances include appearances at Bloodstock Festival, the Metal Hammer Golden Gods Awards on a boat on the Thames, and shows at Wacken, Summer Breeze and the HRH Road Trip in mainland Europe. They are noted for a lively audience response and for drawing new fans at each appearance.

Recordings

By the time of their fourth full-length album, Chapter IV: Antartarctica, the group uses fan funding through Pledge Music to support the release. That album is planned in a limited edition digipack format and also marks the band’s first vinyl release. The touring show connected to the record is called “Lost in Antartarctica”.
