Evening Chorus are a UK folk and indie group that begin in Cardiff in early October 2009. The line-up consists of Gareth Wardle on acoustic guitar and vocals, Rachel Mercer on violin, percussion and vocals, Eugene Capper on banjo and vocals, and Callum Duggan on double bass and vocals.

The group forms in the bedroom of a terraced house in Cardiff, brought together by two lifelong friends, a chance meeting and a university coursemate. They share an interest in tea, biscuits and folk music, and they start by drawing on songs developed in earlier musical projects. Their sound is built around strong vocal harmonies and varied use of the instruments available to them.

Early release

Their first release, Look Forward To The Day, is a live recording of three of the first songs they have ready. The band issues it in hand-made cases with self-designed artwork, and gives it away for free at its first few gigs.

Recognition

Evening Chorus begin to make an impression in Cardiff and are featured on the transatlantic radio show The Waiting Room. Their approach combines hand-made CDs and merchandise with a live performance style that presents a sense of authenticity and care.
