Emmeline is a London-based singer-songwriter and lyricist who works across folk, pop and indie pop. Her music develops from a background in spoken word and a strong interest in language, shaped in part by growing up in a small village in West Yorkshire with a father who is a poet and playwright and a mother who works in radio drama.

She begins writing and performing as a teenager, entering spoken word competitions at 17 without telling her family and friends. She wins a national slam, then introduces her parents to the work when they attend a showcase. The experience helps set her path into music and performance.

Writing and early development

While studying English at university, she meets aspiring producers and beat-makers at parties and starts putting her lyrics over SoundCloud beats. She experiments by rewriting the words of songs she likes and builds up a set of demos. Her approach combines spoken-word precision with songwriting and production-led experimentation.

Collaboration with Fraser T Smith

In November 2021, she spots producer Fraser T Smith at a gig and asks him for advice about the music industry. Smith, known for work with Kano, Stormzy, Dave and Ghetts, arranges a meeting for the next day with Emmeline and his manager. They discuss their creative influences, working methods and the people who inspire them, and Smith sends her a beat. She returns lyrics within days, and the two continue making music together at pace.

Recorded output

Her debut EP, Satellite Navigation System, is released and establishes her as an artist combining storytelling, experimental production and a lyrically focused style.
