Emika

Emika is the recording name of Ema Jolly, a British musician from Bristol who is born in 1986. She works in electronic music, with tags and genre descriptions including dubstep, trip-hop, experimental, and techno. She has released music on Emika Records, and her debut album appears on Ninja Tune.

Background

She has Czech heritage and studies classical piano and composition when young. Before establishing herself as an artist, she waitresses in Bristol and saves for her first Apple Mac and a copy of Logic, at a time when the city is moving from drum and bass toward dubstep. She later lives in Berlin and works as a sound designer for Native Instruments.

Work and releases

In 2010, she makes field recordings at Berghain and creates a sample library for the club's resident producer-DJs to work from. Music built from that material becomes part of Ostgut Ton's anniversary compilation Fünf. Her self-titled debut album follows on Ninja Tune in 2011.
