Embers

Embers is a metal band from San Diego. The name is used by several different acts, but the San Diego group is the one described here. It is listed under black metal, crust, doom metal, metalcore and melodic death metal.

San Diego line-up and style

The band appears as a serious project with a focus on collaborative, emotionally charged music. Its lineup includes Steven DeCaprio on guitar, Kelly Nelson on bass guitar and vocals, Jerry Buchanan on drums, Lillian Phaeton on keyboards, Timm Kennedy on guitar and vocals, and Nine Katechis on viola. The group is also associated with visual presentation, including illustrated album covers, banners, poster art and T-shirts.

Activity and touring

Embers forms on the fringes of the North West Cascadian black metal scene and has performed with acts including High on Fire, Eyehategod, Ludicra, Nachtmystium, Wolves In The Throne Room, Withered and Book Of Black Earth. The band completes two extensive European tours across more than 11 countries, as well as one national tour and five West Coast tours.

Representation and scene context

The band is noted as one of several prominent San Francisco Bay Area metal acts to feature women, with current and past members identified as female. This is highlighted as significant within heavy metal, where women have often been underrepresented.

Recordings

Embers releases one EP, The Birds Fly Again..., and two albums, The First Squall of an Evil Storm and The Gods Are Traitors. The band’s catalogue sits within melodic death metal and metalcore, while its live and scene connections place it close to crust and black metal as well.
