Electrelane
Electrelane are a band from Brighton, United Kingdom, formed in 1998. The group’s core founders are Verity Susman and Emma Gaze. Susman plays keyboards, Farfisa organ, lead vocals, guitar, saxophone and clarinet, and also records under the name Vera November and under her own name. Gaze plays drums. The group’s later line-up also includes Mia Clarke on guitar and backing vocals, and Ros Murray on bass, who also uses the name Ray Rumours.
Style and influences
Their music draws on a broad range of reference points, including Neu!, Sonic Youth and The Velvet Underground. Across their catalogue they move between instrumental rock, art rock, experimental rock, indie rock, indie pop, noise pop and post-punk revival, with electronic elements also present in their sound.
Recordings
The band’s debut album, Rock It To The Moon, is mostly instrumental and appears in 2001. Their second album, The Power Out, is recorded by Steve Albini and brings more vocals and structure into the songs; it appears on Too Pure in 2004. Their third album, Axes, is also recorded by Steve Albini and appears in 2005. Their fourth album, No Shout, No Calls, is written in Berlin during the 2006 World Cup, recorded in Benton Harbor, Michigan in late 2006, and released in 2007. The group is associated with Let’s Rock! Records, and Too Pure releases The Power Out.
Activity
In November 2007, Electrelane go on indefinite hiatus, then return to live activity in 2011 with several dates in England, including festivals such as Field Day in London. The band is active from 1998 to the present.
