Ela Orleans

Ela Orleans is a Polish musician based in Glasgow, UK. She is a member of Hassle Hound, a pop collage group, and also works as a composer for screen projects. Her work is described through the long-running phrase “Movies for Ears”, which reflects an approach that moves from pastoral pop towards more cinematic forms.

Style and approach

Orleans’ music combines carefully shaped sound art sections, electronic textures and orchestral elements. She uses instruments, electronics and softly delivered vocals to create echo-heavy chamber pop, while also shifting material into larger symphonic shapes. Her output sits across psychedelic pop, lo-fi, experimental and pop contexts.

Releases and labels

She issues solo and collaborative recordings on labels including All Saints Records, Warp, Parental Guidance, La Station Radar, Night People, Clan Destine Records, Twisted Nerve and Staubgold. Her discography includes High Moon Low Sun and Lost, both in 2008 and 2009 respectively, Mars Is Heaven and NEO PI-R in 2011, and Tumult in Clouds in 2012. She also releases Double Feature, a split LP with Dirty Beaches on Night People and La Station Radar, and appears on the four-way split Statement with Slim Twig, Dirty Beaches and U.S. Girls.

Orleans plays with artists associated with the New York experimental and noise scenes and works with a wide range of collaborators. These include Dirty Beaches, Lee Ranaldo, Magic Markers, Julia Holter, Space Lady, Lower Dens, Vaselines, The Pastels, Baby Dee, Quintron, The KVB, Le Volume Courbe, Remember Remember and Jackie O Motherfucker, among others.
