El Pony Pisador

El Pony Pisador are a folk group from Barcelona, active since 2014, whose music draws on traditions from several parts of the world. Their sound mixes Celtic music, sea songs, sea shanties, habaneras, bluegrass, tarantella and yodelling, with a focus on detail and arrangement. The group’s name comes from J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings, through the Spanish translation of The Prancing Pony.

Style and repertoire

Their repertoire includes original songs as well as their own versions of existing themes. Alongside Catalan material, they perform music rooted in a wide range of folk traditions, and their albums and live shows bring together sounds from different cultures. They are associated with both traditional Celtic music and sea songs, including shanties and habaneras.

Live performances

The group performs in a playful and unpredictable way, with humour and improvisation playing a large part in their concerts. Their shows include jokes and other unexpected moments, and they perform in Catalonia as well as in other European countries, the United States, Canada and Australia.

Line-up

The group consists of Ramón Anglada, Guillem Codern, Miquel Pérez, Martí Selga and Adrià Vila. Anglada plays vocals, guitar and accordion; Codern handles vocals, banjo, harmonica, bagpipes, Tuvan throat singing and yodelling; Pérez contributes vocals, violin and traditional percussion; Selga plays vocals, flutes, bass ukulele, clarinet and bass; and Vila plays vocals, mandolin, bodhrán, traditional percussion and yodelling.
