El Hijo de la Cumbia is a Buenos Aires-based producer and DJ from the San Martín suburb of the city. He works in cumbia and combines it with hip-hop and dancehall elements.
His name means “The Son of Cumbia”, and his music draws on Mexican and Colombian cumbia rather than the repetitive loops associated with cumbia villera. It is built around thick, varied percussion and has a psychedelic quality.
He develops his approach from an area where traditional cumbia is a common soundtrack for parties and dances, and he makes a living as an independent artist through DJ and production work. He also produces tracks for Mexican artists who find his work online.
