Ed Rush

Ed Rush is the recording name of Ben Settle, a drum and bass producer and DJ from London, United Kingdom. Born in 1973, he works in drum and bass, electronic and techstep, and is associated with the darker end of the genre.

Early development

He begins as a b-boy, then becomes interested in the underground rave scene in West London. Drawn to the breaks in early hardcore, he asks his neighbour, Nico Sykes, to let him produce tracks with him. At the time, Sykes is an engineer with his own label.

Early releases and style

Ed Rush first releases Bludclot Artattack in 1993, a darkcore track that arrives before the split between hardcore and drum and bass is fully established. He follows it with The Mutant in 1995, released with DJ Trace, and then Guncheck, which develops his characteristic sound of gangsta attitude and sharp, heavy basslines.

Techstep and later work

In 1996, he releases material on the Techsteppin' compilation, the Skylab EP on Metalheadz and Killimanjaro on Prototype. These releases help shape the direction of drum and bass towards techstep, a two-step style. He continues to release tracks on various labels, and his reputation grows as his production style develops.
