DyE is the stage name of Juan de Guillebon, a French electronic producer. He records for Joakim’s Tigersushi label and first comes to wider attention through the video for “Fantasy”, a single from his debut album Taki 183.

Background

Before working under the DyE name, Juan de Guillebon plays bass in the Paris electronic scene with Joakim & The Disco, Botox and Maestro. His work is associated with electronic music that moves between dreamy electro-pop, shoegaze, dubstep and nu-disco.

Releases

Taki 183 is DyE’s debut album and includes material that appears across several Tigersushi releases, including “Nike”, “Cristal d’Acier” and “Dark White”. Other tracks linked to the album include “Vader”, “Star Vac”, “Immortals Only”, “Matthias & Charlotte” and “Hole In Ocean”. DyE describes the album as forming a sci-fi universe, with each track representing a mood shaped by time, experience and loss.

Earlier in the project, he creates “One Week, One Track!”, a period in which he uploads a new track to MySpace every week. The first release from that phase is the 12-inch “Imperator”, followed by “Cristal d’Acier”, which features a remix by DJ Mehdi. He also contributes “Nike” to Tigersushi’s 10-year anniversary release.

Production and collaborators

Taki 183 is recorded using analogue equipment including a Roland TR606, a Moog Source and a Korg Poly Six, then brought into Pro Tools. DyE says the project attracts interest from artists including James Murphy, DJ Mehdi, Erol Alkan and James Holden, and he also mentions support from Zombie Zombie, Cosmo Vitelli and Feadz.

Style and approach

DyE links his project to the anonymity and visibility of the web era, and describes his early work as being shaped by blogging as a form of expression. His music is presented as a sequence of contrasting moods rather than a simple compilation, and he frames himself as “the man who speaks to the ears of robots”.
