dunkelbunt
dunkelbunt is the recording name of Ulf Lindemann, a Vienna-based DJ and producer born in 1979. His work sits within gypsy jazz and draws on Balkan, Klezmer and other Eastern European musical forms, combined with reggae, dub, electronica, bossa nova, jazz, trip hop and breakbeats.
Style and influences
Lindemann travels through Eastern Europe by bike to collect sounds and musical impressions, and that experience feeds into his productions. His music brings together traditional Balkan and Klezmer elements with electronic textures and a broad range of club and sound-system styles.
Collaborations and releases
He works with a wide circle of Viennese and international musicians from the Balkan and Klezmer scenes. Among the artists linked with his tracks are 5’nizza, Fanfare Ciocarlia, Amsterdam Klezmer Band, The Cat Empire, Harry Stojka, Östblocket, MC Killo Killo and Orient Expressions.
His debut album Morgenlandfahrt combines different strands of Southeast European music with electronic and world music influences. He also releases material through chat chapeau and Piranha Records, including the single Cinnamon Girl, a collaboration with Boban i Marko Markovic Orkestar that mixes old-school swing, Balkan beats and a love-song feel.
