Dum Dum Girls

Dum Dum Girls are a noise pop and rock group from Los Angeles, United States. The project begins in 2008 as a solo vehicle for Dee Dee, who forms it under a name that refers to The Vaselines’ album Dum-Dum and the Iggy Pop song “Dum Dum Boys”. The band is active until 2016.

Early releases and labels

Dee Dee first releases a home-recorded CD-R on her own label, Zoo Music, followed by a 7-inch on HoZac and a 12-inch EP on Captured Tracks. These early records establish the band’s lo-fi, garage-influenced sound before its later full-length releases.

Albums and EPs

The band’s debut album, I Will Be, is released by Sub Pop and is produced by Dee Dee and Richard Gottehrer, whose credits include work with the Strangeloves, the Voidoids, Blondie, The Go-Go’s and The Raveonettes. The album runs to just under thirty minutes and includes eleven songs, drawing on themes of love, loss, fun, fear and the classic pop style of 1960s girl groups and early punk rock. Dum Dum Girls also release the EP He Gets Me High on Sub Pop in 2011, the second full-length Only in Dreams in 2011, and the EP End of Daze in 2012.

Line-up

The band’s later line-up includes Dee Dee on vocals and guitar, Jules on guitar and vocals, Malia on bass and vocals, and Sandy on drums and vocals. The band is also associated with members and names including Bambi Davies, Jules Medeiros, Sandra Vu, Frankie Rose and Dee Dee.

End of the project

In 2016, Dee Dee announces the end of Dum Dum Girls and begins a new solo project called Kristin Kontrol.
