Dubmatix

Dubmatix is a Toronto-based dub, reggae and electro artist and producer. He builds his work around dub and roots reggae, while also drawing on future-dub, dancehall, rocksteady and drum and bass. His stated aim is to keep close to the classic dub and roots sounds of the 1970s while adding newer technologies and styles.

Career and collaborations

Dubmatix spends extended periods on Canadian and international charts and tours both in Canada and abroad. In 2007 he tours Europe and Canada for three months. He also works as a producer and remixer for artists in several countries, including Scotland, Italy, Portugal, Switzerland, France, Germany and Canada.

His collaborations include reggae figures Sugar Minott, Michael Rose, Alton Ellis and Pinchers, and he also works with Tanya Mullings, who is a Juno-nominated artist. Through this work, he develops a profile as one of Canada’s notable dub and reggae producers.

Live performance

His shows combine live production and on-the-fly mixing with live bass, and he often performs with guest musicians and vocalists depending on the venue and lineup. The performances include improvised sections and heavy emphasis on bass frequencies.

Style

Dubmatix’s music combines classic rockers-style dub and roots with bass-heavy grooves, melodic vocals and references to Jah. His recordings and performances connect older dub traditions with newer electronic approaches, creating a sound that crosses between reggae and electronic music.
