Dub Bunnies

Dub Bunnies is a Jamaican multi-member DJ collective that begins in the mid-1990s, when Bernie and Ginjah start organising reggae parties at their local pub, The Ship Inn. The group’s Easter Sunday party becomes an annual fixture, and more people join over time. At its core, Dub Bunnies has a regular line-up of seven DJs, with a further five or so appearing as guest selectors at times.

Origins and development

The collective is closely associated with The Ship Inn, which later closes in 2007 and is eventually demolished. Although the pub’s closure threatens the continuity of the project, Dub Bunnies continues by moving the Easter events to different venues. In this way, the group remains active beyond the original pub-based setting that helped form it.

Broadcasts and style

In May 2011, Dub Bunnies begins broadcasting on internet radio via Fnoob Underground. The group broadcasts live every other Sunday from 8pm to 10pm UK time and also makes shows available through archives and Mixcloud. Its DJs each bring different approaches within reggae and related sounds, so sets can include calypso, ska, reggae, dub, rocksteady, ragga, dancehall, dubstep and occasional jungle. The music ranges from Jamaican recordings to music from elsewhere in the world, covering material from the 1950s onwards.

Membership and approach

Dub Bunnies is described as a circle of DJs rather than a fixed single-artist project, with the members working under a shared name while maintaining individual styles. Its output varies from programme to programme depending on who is playing.
