Drift is the name attached to several different acts, but the entry here identifies a United States rapper, Kojo Aidoo.
Identity
As a performer, Drift is a person from the United States. The name also appears across a range of unrelated projects in hardcore, screamo, ambient, dark ambient, downtempo, trip-hop, new wave, punk and alternative rock, but those acts are separate from the US rapper.
Other acts using the name
The name Drift is also used by a German hardcore band from Viersen in Nordrhein-Westfalen, formed in 1996 and disbanded in September 2002. Another Drift is an Italian dark ambient project. There is also a French new wave and punk rock band led by Fabrice Nau, a French-Canadian hardcore and screamo band active in the mid-1990s, a Dutch band from the Haarlem area, an Oxford-based three-piece fronted by Bobbie Watson of Comus, a Serbian doom band active in the early to mid-1990s, a Russian downtempo and trip-hop band, a downtempo and chillout project by Adham Shaikh and Tim Floyd dating back to 1997, an Australian alternative rock band from Wollongong, and an early Danish new wave band from 1982.
Releases and scene connections
Among the other projects using the name, the French-Canadian hardcore and screamo band releases one 7-inch on Great American Steak Religion Records in 1995 and one song on a split 7-inch with Jonah on Anima Records. Four or five of its members later go on to form Born Dead Icons. The Dutch band appears on the Alles In Wonderland double compilation with the tracks “Borrowed Time” and “Tsss!”.
Collaborative work
The downtempo and chillout project by Adham Shaikh and Tim Floyd dates from 1997 and is associated with the album Drift from 1996 as the likely inspiration for the name. Another project called Drift is Renaud Letang’s collaborative debut At the Party, co-produced with Chilly Gonzales and recorded at Studios Ferber, with guest appearances from Connan Mockasin, Benny Sings, Jamie Lidell, Infinite Bisous, Jerry Paper, Chuuwee and Vladimir Cosma. Letang’s earlier studio work includes collaborations with Feist, Saul Williams, Philippe Katerine and Chilly Gonzales.
