Dr. Alimantado, born Winston Thompson and also known as The Ital Surgeon, is a Jamaican reggae singer, deejay and producer from Kingston, Jamaica. He records under several early names, including Prince Winston, Winston Cool and Youth Winston.

Career

He starts recording at a young age and becomes best known in the mid to late 1970s. His best-known album is Best Dressed Chicken in Town (1978), a Greensleeves Records collection built from tracks recorded in the mid-1970s. On those recordings, he toasts over singers including John Holt, Gregory Isaacs, Jackie Edwards and Horace Andy.

Notable songs and influence

His biggest hits include “A Place Called Africa” and “Born for a Purpose”. He also gains notice among punk rock audiences in the 1970s after Johnny Rotten praises him in an interview. He is mentioned in The Clash song “Rudie Can’t Fail” in the line “Like the doctor who was born for a purpose”.
