Dorsal Fins
Dorsal Fins is a Melbourne, Australia-based group associated with indie pop and related electronic and pop sounds. It begins as a studio-led project created by Liam McGorry, who is also linked with Saskwatch and Eagle and the Worm, before developing into a live act.
Formation and early releases
The project is initially conceived as a studio-only idea, but it later extends to the stage. In 2014, the band releases a 12-inch record titled Gripless.
Mind Renovation
The debut album, Mind Renovation, is recorded over one week during a period of very hot weather. The album draws on collaboration with friends and musical influences, and it moves across disco, electro pop, psych rock and quieter ballads. It is described as having a varied, collage-like approach, with the vocals shared by Jarrad Brown and Ella Thompson.
Live activity
Dorsal Fins develops a reputation as a live favourite and performs alongside acts including The Cat Empire and Saskwatch. The group also appears at festivals including Boogie and NYE on the Hill.
