Dori Freeman

Dori Freeman is an American singer-songwriter from Galax, Virginia, who works in country, folk, Americana and alt-country. She grows up in a musical family in the Appalachian town of Galax, where her father and grandfather both play music. Her family also owns the Front Porch Gallery and Frame Shop, which is part of The Crooked Road, Virginia’s heritage music trail.

Recording career

In late 2014, Freeman contacts Teddy Thompson through Facebook to share her music, and he decides to produce her album. Thompson says he recognises her talent almost immediately and is struck by her direct vocal delivery. The album is funded through Kickstarter and released by Free Dirt Records in 2016.

Her debut album receives strong critical notice. Rolling Stone Country describes it as a serious Americana debut, Jon Pareles of The New York Times writes about the purity of her voice and the directness of her songwriting, and NPR’s Ann Powers praises its range and emotional nuance. NPR also remarks on how fully formed her singing and songwriting already sound.

Style and influences

Freeman cites Peggy Lee and Rufus Wainwright as major influences. She also draws heavily on traditional Appalachian music and speaks about her connection to the culture of the region. Her songwriting often centres on relationships and breakups, alongside themes of wanting to be independent while also wanting a partner.
