Dopethrone

Dopethrone are a Montréal, Canada-based group active since 2008. They are described as a sludge, stoner metal band, and their broader style is also associated with black metal, blues and metal.

Formation and early work

The band begins as a completely DIY project in Hochelaga, in Montréal, in March 2008. Within three weeks, the group has already written four songs and starts planning a concept for an album. The project develops from the outset with a strong self-managed approach.

Albums and recording

The first album, Demonsmoke, appears about a year after formation. The logo and concept are created by Vincent, who handles guitar and vocals, while Thomas records the material and Vyk produces the CD. In 2011 the band releases Dark Foil, followed in 2012 by III; both are recorded by Thomas and produced by Vyk.

Members and connections

The listed members are Vincent Houde and Shawn Ellingham. The band has also involved musicians connected with Vatican, Blight, Unquintessence, Excreted Cowboy and Fatal Flaw. Across its releases, the group keeps a DIY structure centred on songwriting, recording and production within the band’s own circle.
