Donato Dozzy is an Italian DJ and producer based in Rome. He works across techno, ambient, minimal techno, deep techno and electronic music, and is also known as Donato Scaramuzzi.
Style and approach
Dozzy’s music is characterised by slow-moving sound layers, detailed but restrained rhythms, and occasional natural sounds or synthetic textures that resemble them. His ambient techno has a dense, hypnotic quality, and his DJ sets and performances often develop gradually rather than relying on abrupt changes.
Early releases
He begins releasing minimal techno singles in 2004. These early records often feature collaborations with producers including Brando Lupi and Giorgio Gigli, and some contain more melodic writing than his later work.
Albums and conceptual work
Dozzy starts issuing full-length albums in 2010. Compared with his singles, these releases are more immersive and increasingly conceptual. Some of his later albums focus on tightly defined source material, including sounds made by a single artist on Donato Dozzy Plays Bee Mask and mouth harp on The Loud Silence.
Collaborations and projects
He receives particular recognition for Voices From the Lake, his project with Neel, whose self-titled debut album appears in 2012. He is also associated with Kitchentools, Discogs, Punto, Anxur and Il Quadro di Troisi.
Labels
He releases music on Dozzy Records and Spazio Disponibile.
DJ work
His single and EP releases are generally more beat-driven and suited to extended late-night or after-hours DJ sets.
