Doja Cat
Doja Cat is the stage name of Amala Ratna Zandile Dlamini, a rapper, singer, songwriter and record producer from Tarzana, United States. Her work draws on hip hop, pop, pop rap, alternative rock, grunge and post-grunge, and she is also known for using online platforms to help promote her music.
Early career and breakthrough
She begins releasing music on SoundCloud as a teenager. The track “So High” leads to a recording contract with Kemosabe and RCA Records, before the release of her debut extended play, “Purrr!”, in 2014. Her debut studio album, “Amala”, appears in 2018 but has limited commercial impact. Later that year, the single “Mooo!” brings her wider online attention.
Albums and chart success
Doja Cat’s second studio album, “Hot Pink”, is released in 2019 and reaches the top ten of the US Billboard 200. It includes “Say So”, which reaches number one on the Billboard Hot 100 after a remix featuring Nicki Minaj. Her third album, “Planet Her”, is released in 2021, stays in the Billboard 200 top ten for an extended period, and produces the singles “Kiss Me More” with SZA, “Need to Know” and “Woman”.
Her fourth studio album, “Scarlet”, is released in 2023 and takes a more hip-hop-focused direction, entering the top five of the Billboard 200. Its lead single, “Paint the Town Red”, reaches number one on both the Billboard Hot 100 and the Billboard Global 200. Her fifth studio album, “Vie”, is released in 2025, returns to pop influences and also reaches the top five.
