Djinn

Djinn is the name used by several different acts working in distinct styles, including industrial, dark ambient, dubstep, drum and bass, jungle, metal and experimental music.

Venice-based solo project

One Djinn is an industrial and dark ambient solo project from Venice, Italy, founded in 1999 by Alex Vintras. This project combines the layered atmospheres and resonant textures associated with dark ambient with the experimental approach and rhythmic drive of second-wave industrial music. It also makes regular use of samples drawn from varied sources, including field recordings, Gregorian chant, film dialogue and fragments of classical music.

Brooklyn group

Another Djinn is a Brooklyn, New York group whose music is described as “East Coast Tribal”. Their sound ranges from traditional Middle Eastern music to an experimental blend of traditional instruments, electronics and human beatbox. They release The Middle East Side in 2006 and follow it with The Silent D in 2009, extending their focus on contemporary interpretations of traditional sounds.

Swedish collective

DJINN is also a Swedish collective featuring members of Hills and GOAT. On Rocket Recordings, they issue work that moves through free jazz and cosmic jazz, while earlier they release the tape Avant De Servir on Swedish label Zeon Light. Their later release Transmission develops this approach further, with hypnotic rhythms, freeform improvisation and a wide palette that also recalls freak-folk, Don Cherry, Popol Vuh, Art Ensemble of Chicago and Swedish underground folk-psych.

UK DJ and producer

Djinn is a UK dubstep, drum and bass and jungle DJ and producer established in 2004. She holds two long-running radio shows, a monthly residency on Swiss radio SRF Virus in 2012, and performs across the UK and elsewhere in Europe, including the Czech Republic, Belgium, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Spain and Croatia. Her releases appear on Subdepth Records and Mindstep Music.

UK singer, songwriter, producer and composer

Another Djinn is a solo UK-based singer, songwriter, producer and composer who gains recognition after featuring on the charity single Donasian with A.R Rahman and Mukhtar Sahota. This is followed by the debut album Just A Thought, and the music also appears on mainstream television outlets including Channel 4 and Sky.

Metal band

Djinn is also a thrash, speed and black metal band that begins in Split, Croatia under the name Evil Blood. The group later relocates to London and becomes Lord of Darkness, before changing its name to Djinn and moving to Glenrothes, Scotland in 1995. Former Venom drummer Abaddon joins the band in 2007, and the group changes its name back to Evil Blood in 2009.

Netherlands band

A further Djinn is a band from Groningen, Netherlands, active in the late 1970s and early 1980s. They release one full-length album, Tip-Toe Through the Backdoor, in 1979.
