DJ Sprinkles
DJ Sprinkles is the recording alias of Terre Thaemlitz, a United States-based multimedia producer, writer, public speaker, educator, audio remixer and DJ. Thaemlitz also runs the Comatonse Recordings label. Their work is centred on identity politics and social critique, with themes that include gender, sexuality, class, linguistics, ethnicity, race and the economics of commercial media production.
Style and work
Although DJ Sprinkles is associated with deep house, Thaemlitz works across a wide range of forms, including electroacoustic computer music, club-oriented deep house, digital jazz, ambient and computer-composed neo-expressionist piano solos. Graphic design, photography, illustration, text and video are also part of the project’s output.
Releases and labels
Thaemlitz’s recordings appear on a varied set of labels, including Mille Plateaux, Daisyworld Discs, Subharmonic Records, Universal Music Germany’s Classical Division and the UK dance label Disorient. The range reflects the project’s movement between experimental, club and cross-genre contexts.
Writing, speaking and education
Thaemlitz has published writings on music and culture internationally in books, academic journals and magazines. As a speaker and educator, they focus on non-essentialist transgender identity and pansexual queer sexuality. They take part in panel discussions across Europe and Japan and also run cross-cultural sensitivity workshops at Tokyo’s Uplink Factory. Thaemlitz is based in Kawasaki, Japan.
