DJ Sneak is the performance name of Carlos Sosa, a house DJ and producer who moves from Puerto Rico to Chicago in 1983. His early musical background comes from salsa, merengue and Latin orchestras, and in Chicago he takes influence from underground house, Warehouse parties, early mix tapes by Farley Jackmaster Funk, Ralphi Rosario and Steve Hurley, and radio shows on WBMX.

Career beginnings

Sneak earns his nickname during graffiti tagging work, then works in retail as an airbrush artist while developing his DJ skills through mobile jobs and local nightclubs. He focuses on production in a crowded Chicago DJ scene and sets up the independent label Defiant Records. He begins recording tracks in 1992, using a stripped-back studio setup and shaping an unusual new style.

Breakthrough in Chicago house

In 1994, while working at Gramophone Records, he meets Cajmere, also known as Green Velvet, the owner of Cajual and Relief Records. Cajmere releases several of Sneak’s important tracks and helps bring him wider international attention. By 1995, his disco-filtered house sound becomes closely associated with him and is described as influential in the development of house music.

Notable tracks and influence

His 1996 track “You Can't Hide From Your Bud”, released on Derrick Carter’s Classic Recordings, is treated as a key record in the filtered disco house style and as a precursor to a wider wave of disco-influenced house music. His work is described as having an influence on later artists including Daft Punk, Basement Jaxx and Armand Van Helden.

DJ and remix work

DJ Sneak also builds a long career as a remixer, with remixes used widely in clubs. He becomes a regular presence on the international club circuit, including frequent visits to Ibiza, and performs at events run by UK-based organisations such as Ministry of Sound, Cream, Manumission and Miss Moneypenny’s. He also appears at UK summer festivals including Homelands, Creamfields and T in the Park.
