DJ Sammy

DJ Sammy is a Spanish electronic dance DJ and producer from Palma, Mallorca. Born in 1969, he is active from the dance and club scenes and is associated with electronic, euro-trance and eurodance.

Early career

He begins his music career in 1984 in the dance clubs of Majorca, including gigs at Zorba's. He also works as a DJ at Cadena Top radio station. In 1992, he becomes resident DJ at Joy Palace Club in Arenal. A degree in music technology is part of his background.

Releases and commercial breakthrough

In November 1995, he releases his first single, Life Is Just a Game, with Marie José. The song becomes a top 10 hit in Spain. Other singles including You’re My Angel and Prince of Love chart in Germany. His debut album, Life Is Just a Game, follows in 1998.

His international breakthrough comes in 2001 when he begins releasing music under his own name. Heaven, recorded with Dutch singer Do, becomes a major hit in Europe and Australia, sells 2 million copies, reaches number 2 in the US singles chart and number 1 in the UK in 2002. He follows it with a remake of Don Henley’s Boys of Summer, which reaches number 2 in the UK.

Labels, production and radio work

He founds the dance labels Super M Records and Gamba Music Company, and later establishes myclubroom recordings. He also produces for other artists, including David Bisbal, Chenoa, Marta Sanchez, Soraya, Nuria Fergó, September, Mikel Johnson and Nena. A weekly radio programme hosted by Sammy is part of his work, with guest DJs and electronic music selections, and he is linked with the MyClubRoom concept, which combines internet TV, club-event coverage and radio.

Recognition

His awards and honours include a US BMI Pop Award in 2004 for Heaven, the American Dance Star Award for Best International Artist in 2003, and an International Dance Music Award nomination in Miami in 2003. His catalogue is described as having sold over 20 million copies, and he is associated with chart success in many countries.

Later projects

In 2009 he releases Feel the Love, followed by 4love and a remix of Michael Jackson’s Earth Song. He also works from his studio in Mallorca while touring and producing for pop acts. A project called Miss Kookie is also part of his production work.
