DJ Phantasy
DJ Phantasy is the performing name of Stephen Hannon, a UK drum and bass artist from Hammersmith, London. He works in jungle and related rave and old school hardcore styles, and is also part of several collaborative projects, including SaSaSaS, where he is one of five members.
Career
Phantasy emerges from the late-1980s acid house and rave period, when British club culture develops rapidly. He becomes closely associated with the early growth of dance music in the UK and is described as a producer and DJ who helps shape the sound as it moves from its first phase into a wider mainstream phenomenon. His career is marked by a focus on innovation and by continuing DJ work.
He has released more than 300 tracks and is linked with several business ventures in dance music. These include Devotion, a promotions company that stages events internationally, and Easy Records, a label that releases music in the drum and bass field.
Collaborations and projects
Alongside his solo work, Phantasy appears in a number of group and duo settings. These include DJ's Unite, DJ Phantasy & Gemini, Miranda, Harry Shotta Show, Phantasy & Shodan, Liquid Aliens and Ment 4 Bass. His work with SaSaSaS places him within a larger collective format rather than a purely solo career.
Releases
Easy Records is associated with the album project The Jungle Story, a concept release featuring vocalists and producers from the drum and bass scene. This places Phantasy not only as a DJ and producer, but also as a label figure connected to scene-building projects.
Style and context
His music is tied to the development of rave culture, jungle and drum and bass in the UK. He is presented as an established figure in dance music with a long-running role as both performer and organiser.
