DJ Moneyshot

DJ Moneyshot is a UK DJ, turntablist and producer associated with hip-hop, funk and club music. He is a member of The Allergies and is also known for live mash-ups, turntable routines and record selections that range from hip-hop classics and funky breakbeats to club tracks and unusual oddities.

DJing and live work

He builds a reputation through technically driven sets and scratch-heavy performances, and appears at a wide range of events, from club nights to large-scale parties and unusual venues. He plays across Europe, Australia and the UK, including European bunker shows, Australian Full Moon raves and Red Bull boat parties in Bristol. He also shares bills with artists such as Coldcut, Grandmaster Flash, Gilles Peterson and Krafty Kuts.

Moneyshot is closely linked with broadcast and club DJ culture. He becomes part of Ninja Tune’s Solid Steel DJ team in 2008, joining the next generation of genre-crossing club DJs around the label’s 20th anniversary celebrations. His work for Solid Steel radio, along with appearances on XFM, BBC 1, 6Music and 1 Xtra, becomes especially well known.

Mixtapes, edits and radio work

His mixtapes and radio mixes include sets centred on rock rarities, musical theatre, Beastie Boys sample sources and funk and hip-hop selections. These include Mother’s Ruin, Showtune Dummies!!, Check Your Head and The Dischandler. They help establish a following in club circles and through online circulation.

He is described as an award-winning mix maker, and his studio and radio work extends into writing and journalism. He contributes Serato masterclasses to Computer Music, writes for Wax Poetics and HHC, and appears monthly in Future Music with Classic Album features on records including Beck’s Odelay, Goldie’s Timeless and Nuyorican Soul’s self-titled debut.

Production and releases

He begins making his own tracks after working mainly as a DJ and remixer. His original material includes the track Wolfman, which receives support from Fort Knox Five, and his re-edit of Caspa’s Where’s My Money is named tune of the week on BBC Radio 1.

Other work and collaborations

Moneyshot also works as a resident DJ for the UK And-1 basketball team, and performs four-deck shows with Parker. He is supported by figures including DJ Food, Yoda, Huw Stephens and Andy Smith, and US rap group Ugly Duckling names a B-side Cardiff after appearing at his night in Cardiff.
