Dj Mehdi

Dj Mehdi, born Mehdi Favéris-Essadi in 1977, is a French DJ and producer from Asnières-sur-Seine. He begins his career in 1992 with the rap group Ideal J, alongside Kery James, and also DJs for 113. His work sits across hip hop and electronic music, and he is associated with Ed Banger Records and his own label, Espionnage.

Career

He creates Espionnage with artists including Rohff, Rocé, Karlito, Dj Feadz and Zdar of Cassius. He also works with Assassin, MC Solaar and Keziah Jones. In addition to his club and recording work, he serves as the official DJ for Kourtrajmé, a French collective of short-film producers.

Albums and collaborations

Dj Mehdi releases two solo albums: Story of Espion in 2002 and Lucky Boy in 2006. In 2010 he launches Carte Blanche with Riton, a collaborative project influenced by Chicago house.

Film and television music

He contributes to original soundtracks including Femme Fatale, directed by Brian De Palma, and Rois et Reines, directed by Arnaud Desplechin.

Death

Dj Mehdi dies in 2011 after an accident at his Paris home when a skylight collapses as he is celebrating Riton’s birthday. He is the only person killed in the incident.
