DJ Deep

DJ Deep is the stage name of Andreas Peine, a German DJ born in 1968. He is associated with deep house and the French house scene, and he is known for presenting underground house music to international audiences.

Career

He starts DJing around the early 1990s, when house music is still an underground movement and the French scene is still developing. Laurent Garnier gives him his first club bookings, at Boy in Paris for the Oz parties and then at Le Palace for the Zoo parties. He also begins a daily radio show on Radio FG 98.2, broadcasting from noon to 2 PM, and later brings in DJ Gregory and DJ Alex from Tokyo for a show called A Deep Groove, which mixes music ranging from Mos Def to Jeff Mills.

As his profile grows in Paris, he compiles What’s Up Mix It with friends from the What's up label. The compilation includes artists such as Dimitri from Paris, DJ Cam, Saint Germain and Gilb’r, along with his own track “Sweet Summer Vibe”.

Paris club and radio work

In 1995, Laurent Garnier launches the Wake up parties at the Rex Club, and DJ Deep becomes the resident warm-up DJ. He later moves from Radio FG to Radio Nova, where he presents Saturday night shows for about five years. In 2002 he returns to Radio FG 98.2 for a Thursday night slot.

Recordings, aliases and labels

In 1997, he releases the EPs “the fire” and “the earth” on Basenotic under the name The Deep. These records are produced by Julien Jabre and receive support from Louie Vega and Joe Claussell.

His first mix CD, French sessions, appears in 1999 on Distance Music and features tracks by Kerri Chandler, Blaze, Ron Trent, Ten City and Joe Claussell. In 2001, he works with the Respect is Burning team on Respect to Dj Deep, followed by a worldwide tour. A third mix CD follows on Distance in 2003, again featuring house and related tracks from artists including Kerri Chandler, Needs, Osunlade and Kenny Bobien.

Promotions, festivals and labels

He promotes the Legends parties at the Rex Club from 1997, with guests including Frankie Feliciano, Joe Claussell, Kerri Chandler, Tommy Musto, JoVonn, Michael Watford and Nick Jones. He also becomes linked to the Respect roster, and his Respect is Burning parties and CD series document the French house scene.

In 2005 he launches two labels: Deeply Rooted House Records, focused on underground house, and House Music Records, which reissues classic or hard-to-find house records. Deeply Rooted House releases work by Franck Roger, MAnoo and Kerri Chandler, including the track “Back to the Raw”. House Music Records issues records by LB BAD, Burrell and Charles Mac Dougald.

That same year, city to city appears as a double CD release on House Music Records and BBE Records, presented as a journey through Chicago, Detroit and New York underground house. In 2006, the Back to the future series on HMR/DRH features reissues and new material from artists including Mike Dearborn, K-Alexi and Terry Hunter, with cover design by Delta.
