DJ Bone

DJ Bone is a Detroit-born DJ and techno producer from Detroit, United States. He works as an independent artist and is associated with Detroit techno, techno and electronic music. His labels include Subject Detroit and Further, and his own label, Subject Detroit, is identified with a futuristic approach while still rooted in Detroit techno’s sound.

DJ career and style

Bone begins his DJ career with weekly sets at The Love Club, also known as The Shelter, in Detroit. He builds a local following there and goes on to play at several Detroit clubs, including a period of performing five nights a week across three different clubs, as well as at underground parties in the city. He also provides fortnightly live mixes for the Deep Space Radio show on 107.5 in Detroit.

His approach to DJing emphasises technique and control. He is described as using blending, scratching, backspinning and fader work, and as performing with a strong focus on the turntables and mixer as part of his style. He also describes his three-deck sets as a distinctive part of his performance method.

Detroit roots and influences

Bone’s sound is shaped by Detroit and its techno history. He experiences the energy of Detroit Techno at the Music Institute, and he cites the radio presence of Electrifyin’ Mojo and The Wizard as major influences. His productions are inspired by Detroit, the city where he comes from, and he presents himself as a Detroit native committed to an uncompromising, independent approach.

Residencies, radio and international bookings

He holds residencies at four of Detroit’s top clubs. In late 1997, he begins a residency at Motor Lounge in Hamtramck, where he helps pioneer an underground Detroit techno night. That residency draws large weekly crowds and is also broadcast live on radio every Friday from midnight until 2 am on 87.9 FM. After hearing him at the 1996 Love Club Anniversary Party, Laurent Garnier books him to headline the Rex Club in Paris, and he subsequently receives invitations to play events across Europe and at clubs and events worldwide.

Production and Subject Detroit

Bone starts making original tracks because he finds there is not enough electronic music that fits his style for his sets. He then establishes Subject Detroit as a label for his own music, with a focus on what he describes as sonic soul. His label and productions are presented as extensions of the same underground, Detroit-rooted approach that defines his DJ work.

Reputation

He is known for prioritising the music over hype and for resisting pressure to fit a more commercial DJ mould. His reputation is built on an independent stance, technical ability and a strong connection to Detroit techno culture.
