DIY

DIY is a UK deep house DJ collective from Nottingham, active from 1989. It begins as the DiY Sound System, one of Britain’s first house sound systems, alongside Tonka. The collective includes Peter Birch, DiY Jack, Richard Down, Mark Harrison, Emma Kirby, Nag Kirinde, Pip (DIY) and Simon Smith.

Sound system and label

The group forms in Nottingham in 1989 and later establishes its own record label in 1993, first called Strictly 4 Groovers and later renamed DiY Discs. The label continues to operate and release house music. The main DJs associated with the collective include Simon DK, Digs and Woosh, who play at nights in the UK, Europe and the United States.

Style and activity

DIY is associated with underground house and deep house, with links to techno and electronic music. It remains active and continues to appear at club nights and events.

Related project

The name DIY is also used as an alias by UK garage producer Karl “Tuff Enuff” Brown. Under that name, he releases material alongside work on his 2Tuf 4U Records label and collaborations with Todd Edwards, El-B and others.
