Disco Express

Disco Express is a Hungarian glam rock group from Miskolc, active since 1996. It forms around the idea of reviving beat, pop and disco songs in a party rock style, often with Hungarian lyrics that use irony and a distinctive sense of humour, alongside theatrical stage elements, costumes and a traditional glam rock image.

Formation and concept

The group forms in Miskolc in 1996. Its name comes from the film The Adventures of Ford Fairlane. Bassist Vincent Valentine starts the band with the notion that there is no need for original songs, and that older hits can be reworked in a way that has not been heard before. In its early period, the group gains a reputation for controversy and scandal, despite strong audience response.

Releases and recording history

After the early years, the band releases Számcsengő System in 2001 as a maxi CD and video clip on Premier Art Records, a small independent label. In spring 2002 it follows with Disco Accident - The Greatest Hits, an album that gathers the group’s biggest live successes from its first six years. The band then continues with many concerts and several tours abroad.

Work on a new album begins in 2004, by which point the group is preparing mostly original material. In spring 2005 it signs with Magneoton/Mton, part of Warner Music Hungary. Later that year it releases the maxi CD Pláza Angyal, which receives regular play on Hungarian commercial radio request shows and has a video clip shown on Viva TV. In October 2005 the second album, Ah.Merica, appears with 11 original songs and two covers.

Style

Disco Express combines glam rock and hard rock elements with a retro approach to beat, pop and disco material. Its performances emphasise costumes, stage spectacle and a deliberately provocative presentation.
