Dirty Ray
Dirty Ray is the solo name used by Kevin Weatherill after his departure from Immaculate Fools. Under this name, he moves away from the group’s Celtic influences and into a stripped-back blues style on his solo debut Primitive.
Style and influences
The music is shaped by blues traditions and by influences including John Lee Hooker, Howlin’ Wolf, Tom Waits and Nick Cave. The recorded sound on Primitive is built around Weatherill’s work with Simon Anderson on percussion and Rainy Moor on electric organ.
Release context
The Dirty Ray project begins after Immaculate Fools break up in 1997, when Weatherill leaves the band and records as a solo artist.
