Digital Mystikz

Digital Mystikz are a dubstep and electronic group from South Norwood, United Kingdom. The act consists of Coki and Mala, whose real names are D. Harris and Mark Lawrence. Along with Loefah, they run the DMZ label and promote the DMZ club night, which takes place at the Mass in Brixton every two months. Loefah also releases music on the label and performs back-to-back DJ sets with Mala, but is not a member of the group.

Releases and labels

After a period of releasing only single 12-inch records on labels including DMZ and Soul Jazz, Digital Mystikz release their first LP, Return II Space, in 2010. That album features productions by Mala only. Their second LP, Urban Ethics, also released in 2010, features productions by Coki.

DMZ and dubstep culture

DMZ is described as one of dubstep’s most influential regular club nights and as central to the scene. The event starts in March 2005, and its attendance grows steadily. A first-anniversary night, when a queue of 600 people forces a move from the regular 400-capacity room to Mass’s main room, is cited as a significant moment in dubstep history. BBC Radio 1 DJ Mary Anne Hobbs discovers dubstep at DMZ. The club night is closely associated with deep bass, and its flyers carry the slogan “come meditate on bass weight.”
