Die Apokalyptischen Reiter
Die Apokalyptischen Reiter are a German metal group from Weimar, formed in 1995. Their name translates as “The Apocalyptic Riders”. The band remains active and is associated with death metal, folk metal, heavy metal and thrash metal, with a broader sound that draws on a range of metal subgenres and other influences.
Style and development
In its early period, the group combines death metal and thrash metal with melodic elements. That approach appears on its releases up to and including Allegro Barbaro, as well as on selected tracks from All You Need Is Love. This phase features aggressive songwriting, changing tempos and harsh vocals.
From All You Need Is Love onwards, the band’s music becomes more structured and melodic, with clean vocals and more conventional song forms such as verse-chorus arrangements, bridges and solos. This gives the later material a more accessible sound while keeping a heavy metal core.
A further shift comes with Have a Nice Trip, which begins a period of experimentation with a wider set of styles, including ambient and jazz. The group writes lyrics in both English and German, although later albums such as Licht use German only.
