Deva Premal is a singer from Nürnberg, Germany, born in 1970. She is known for bringing Sanskrit mantras into mainstream listening and for making meditative, spiritual music with Prabhu Music, combining ancient Tibetan and Sanskrit mantras with contemporary arrangements.

She is born as Jolantha Fries. Her father is described as a mystic and artist, and her mother is musically talented. She receives violin and piano lessons as well as voice training, and by the time she is five she is already chanting the Gayatri Mantra daily. Meditation remains a regular part of her life.

Premal studies Shiatsu, Reflexology, CranioSacral Therapy and massage, but music remains her main focus. Her singing shows the influence of Indian classical music, although she does not present it as imitation of the tradition. She says the music comes naturally to her, as if she had heard it before in another life.

Her albums attract many letters from listeners who use her music in settings around birth and death. Elisabeth Kübler-Ross, author of On Death And Dying, asks Miten and Deva Premal to perform for her at the end of her life, an occasion Premal describes as unforgettable.
