Della Mae

Della Mae is a US bluegrass band formed in Boston, Massachusetts, in 2009. The group is active from 2009 to the present and has been associated with bluegrass and country, with related tags including alt-country and progressive bluegrass.

Formation and name

The band begins with Kimber Ludiker, Amanda Kowalski, Grace van’t Hof, and Avril Smith. Its name comes from the song “Big Spike Hammer.”

Recordings

The group releases its first EP, Della Mae: Acoustic EP, in 2010. Its first full-length album, I Built This Heart, follows in 2011. The second album, This World Oft Can Be, receives a Grammy nomination for Best Bluegrass Album at the 56th Grammy Awards in 2014. Della Mae then issues a self-titled third album in 2015, followed by Headlight in 2020.
