One album, Travels, first appears on Top Shelf Records before a later reissue on Bridge Nine.
Line-up
The group’s lineup includes Derek Archambault on vocals and acoustic guitar, Jay Maas on guitar, Jake Woodruff on guitar, Joe Longobardi on drums and Mike Poulin on bass. The verified membership list also includes Derek Archambault, Joe Longobardi and Jay Maas.
Recorded output
Defeater releases three full-length albums, two EPs and a single. Its debut album, Travels, appears in 2008. The band’s recorded work develops a continuing storyline, which makes it known for concept-driven songwriting.
Concept and themes
The narrative focus centres on a working-class family on the Jersey Shore in the post-Second World War period. The story follows a young man born at the end of the war and explores hardship, internal conflict and prejudice within that setting. The band addresses themes such as war, murder, racism, sexism and homophobia, and links them to the social realities of the era rather than idealised images of post-war America.
