Deekline is the performing name of Nick Annand, a DJ and producer from London, United Kingdom. He works in breakbeat, breaks, drum and bass, jungle and ragga jungle, and is also associated with UK breakbeat more broadly.

Career

Deekline starts out collecting records as a child, with early influences from funk and electro before moving into hardcore and jungle. He becomes closely associated with breakbeat from the start of that scene’s development and builds a style that combines breakbeat with funk, electro and, later, Miami bass.

He is one half of the duo Deekline and Wizard, alongside Greg Fleming. Under the Booty Bouncer name with Wizard, he records “Fame & The Money”, which receives airplay on MTV.

Releases, remixes and collaborations

His best-known tracks include “Don’t Smoke The Reefer”, “Every Posse & Crew” with FreQ Nasty, and “Touch Your Toes”, which is released on Norman Cook’s Skint label. He also makes an official remix of Ol’ Dirty Bastard’s “Got Your Money”.

Other remixes mentioned include work on tracks by Armand Van Helden, Stereo MCs and Freestylers, as well as the “Boom Blast” remix for Freestylers and a remix of “My My My” by Armand Van Helden. “Outta Space”, released as a bootleg, is later signed by the German label Super Star.

He works with a range of artists including Top Cat, Skinny Man, Freestylers, Arthur Baker and Stanton Warriors.

Labels and club activity

Deekline founds Rat Records, which builds a catalogue of 23 releases. He also runs club nights in London, including Bounce at Bar Rhumba, which becomes known as a booty-bass event.

He is also connected with the labels Crisp Biscuit, Cut & Run, Dub & Run and Gutter Gutter, and is noted as a label owner and operator.
