Death By Chocolate
Death By Chocolate is a UK group active since 2000 and centred on Angela Faye Tillett, who performs under the confectionery name Angie Tillett. The act comes from the English seaside town of Clacton-on-Sea in concept and imagery, with Tillett presenting herself as a teenage chambermaid character and using sweets, colours and letters as recurring subjects in her material.
The project’s songs mix spoken or recited fragments with pop keyboard lines and draw on a range of retro and playful styles. These include 1960s spy-film instrumentals, bubblegum psychedelia and novelty covers. One example is a twee version of Cat Stevens’s “If You Want to Sing Out, Sing Out”, known from the film Harold and Maude. The music is framed as both a pop-cultural collage and a form of escapist fantasy.
Death By Chocolate are also described as a Swiss indie rock band, and their recorded work includes the 2009 debut EP My Portable Love and the album From Birthdays to Funerals. They are noted for energetic live performances and for playing across Europe.
