Death Angel

Death Angel is a heavy metal and thrash metal group from San Francisco, formed in 1982. The band is associated with the San Francisco Bay Area thrash metal scene of the 1980s and is often linked with the second wave of thrash metal. Its early material draws on traditional heavy metal before moving more firmly into thrash.

Formation and early years

The group forms around cousins Rob Cavestany, Dennis Pepa, Gus Pepa and Andy Galeon, all of Filipino descent. Mark Osegueda joins as lead vocalist in 1984 after working as a roadie for the band. Death Angel first appears on tape with the demo Heavy Metal Insanity in 1983, followed by Kill as One in 1985, which spreads widely through tape-trading networks and helps build their reputation.

First albums and break-up

After signing to Enigma Records, Death Angel releases its debut album, The Ultra-Violence, in 1987, when the members are still teenagers. The album leads to touring with other metal bands. Frolic Through the Park follows in 1988 and shows a broader approach, including a cover of “Cold Gin”. Its single “Bored” receives airplay on MTV’s Headbangers Ball and later appears on the soundtrack to Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III. In 1989 the band signs to Geffen Records and releases Act III in 1990, an album with a wider mix of musical ideas that still remains rooted in metal. Singles from this period include “Seemingly Endless Time” and “A Room with a View”.

While touring for Act III, the band’s tour bus crashes in 1990 and drummer Andy Galeon is seriously injured. Activity stops and Death Angel disbands in 1991. An unauthorised live album, Fall from Grace, is released without the band’s involvement.

Side projects and reunion

After the split, several members form The Organization, which explores alternative rock and funk influences. That project releases The Organization in 1993 and Savor the Flavor in 1995 before ending. In the late 1990s, Cavestany, Galeon and Osegueda reunite in Swarm, which issues EPs and a compilation album.

Death Angel reunites in 2001 for the benefit concert Thrash of the Titans. Guitarist Ted Aguilar joins in place of Gus Pepa. The reunion leads to touring and the album The Art of Dying in 2004, followed by the box set Archives and Artifacts in 2005.

Later releases and line-up changes

The band continues with Killing Season in 2008, Relentless Retribution in 2010, The Dream Calls for Blood in 2013, The Evil Divide in 2016 and Humanicide in 2019. The Dream Calls for Blood returns the group to the Billboard 200. The title track of Humanicide receives a Grammy Award nomination for Best Metal Performance.

Over the years Death Angel goes through numerous line-up changes. Rob Cavestany remains the only constant member, and Cavestany and Mark Osegueda appear on all of the band’s studio albums. Later members include Ted Aguilar, Will Carroll and Damien Sisson. Dennis Pepa and Andy Galeon later leave the group.

Recent activity

Death Angel releases the acoustic-oriented EP Under Pressure in 2020 and the live album The Bastard Tracks in 2021. Drummer Will Carroll contracts COVID-19 during a tour in 2020 and later recovers. In 2025 the band releases the singles “Wrath (Bring Fire)” and “Cult of the Used”. It continues to tour and perform at festivals while working on a tenth studio album.
