Death and Vanilla

Death and Vanilla are a Swedish trio from Malmö, formed in 2007 by vocalist Marleen Nilsson and Anders Hansson, with Magnus Bodin later joining the line-up. They work in dream pop, hauntology and neo-psychedelia, and their sound draws on electronic music as well as older styles and techniques.

Background

Anders Hansson has been active in the Swedish music scene since the 1980s and also records solo as Love C.A. in the 1990s. He has produced songs for the Eurovision Song Contest. The group has been active since 2007.

Releases and style

The trio releases five albums in total, beginning with their self-titled debut in 2012. To Where the Wild Things Are..., released on Fire Records in 2015, brings them a wider audience. Are You A Dreamer? follows in 2019.

The band often uses vintage instruments and equipment, including vibraphone, organ, mellotron, tremolo guitar and Moog, and plays through amplifiers from the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. Their music aims to evoke the sound of 1960s and 1970s soundtrack music, library music, Krautrock, French yé-yé pop, 1960s psychedelia and early electronic music. Supernatural imagery and old recordings are also part of their creative approach.
