Dead Kennedys

Dead Kennedys are an American punk rock band from San Francisco, formed in 1978. They are associated with hardcore punk, punk, punk rock and political lyrics, and play a central role in the early American punk scene during their first eight years of activity.

Original lineup and early changes

The original lineup includes lead guitarist East Bay Ray, bassist Klaus Flouride, lead vocalist Jello Biafra, drummer Ted and rhythm guitarist 6025. 6025 leaves in 1979, and Ted departs in 1980 after the recording of the debut album Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables. D. H. Peligro joins on drums in 1981 and becomes the band’s longest-serving drummer until his death in 2022.

Recordings and label

The band releases the EP In God We Trust Inc. in 1981, followed by the studio albums Plastic Surgery Disasters in 1982, Frankenchrist in 1985 and Bedtime for Democracy in 1986. Most of their recordings are released through Alternative Tentacles, the independent label founded by Biafra and East Bay Ray.

Controversy and breakup

Dead Kennedys are known for songs that satirise political figures, authority, popular culture and punk itself. Their lyrics and artwork generate controversy during their initial run, with some stores refusing to stock their records and wider debate around censorship in rock music. In the mid-1980s, Biafra becomes a prominent critic of the Parents Music Resource Center, and an obscenity trial between 1985 and 1986 ends in a hung jury. The band announces its breakup in January 1986, and Bedtime for Democracy is recorded and released soon afterwards.

After the split

After the band dissolves, Biafra continues to run Alternative Tentacles and works with other artists including D.O.A. and NoMeansNo, as well as on his own projects Lard and the Guantanamo School of Medicine. He also releases spoken word recordings. A legal dispute in 2000 over songwriting credits and royalties ends with Biafra losing the case, and that decision is upheld on appeal in 2003.

Reformation

Dead Kennedys reform in 2001 without Biafra, using different vocalists for live performances. Since then, the band continues to tour but does not release any new studio albums.
